I haven't started on Season 3 yet, but what is it? A figment of their imaginations? Why didn't it kill Mr. Echo? Is there more to it than just black smoke? If they do explain it at the beginning of Season 3, please don't spoil it for me.

Are you in the UK or Australia? Nobody knows what the black smoke monster (Security System) is but the most popular theory is that it's made up of nanobots. Is there something or someone controlling it? or is it out of control? Does it have the ability to read a person's past and judge whether that person is good or bad?
I don't think it's a figment of anyone's imagination since Jack and Kate both saw it just before it grabbed Locke in Season 1. Also, when Eko saw it, Charlie saw it too. So it's real, not imagined.
We've got one more episode for Season 3 before a 12-week break here in the US. We'll resume watching S3 on 07Feb. Can't wait!!

Hello,When evil confronts evil, there is conflict. Nothing on the "Lost" island makes common sense. The word "evil" here is personified; no longer an abstract noun.Mr. Eko has a history of evil deeds.When evil is running around looking for something as evil as itself, it discovered Mr. Eko in the jungle. Mr. Eko, at that moment,was more powerful and defied the jungle evil enough to force the evil away.The question is why doesn't the jungle evil seek out some of the other survivors?
