Without a doubt, Kim Stanley Robinson.

His books explore the near future. Look at his current two parts of a planned three parter:

_Forty Signs of Rain_
_Fifty Degrees Below_

He starts out by flooding Washington DC and then stalling the Gulf Stream. Pretty darned believable.

His California tryptich is also great. Gold Coast is one of them. Will get back with the other two.

Then his Mars series: Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars, looks at planet forming and what a planet-wide ecological work would be about.

Really great reading with lots of believable science in the fiction.

Well, this isn't a science fiction novel, but one of my favorite author's is a man called Carl Hiaasen. He's absolutely one of the funniest guys out there. All his novels are based in Florida and all of them have something to do with enviornmentalism.

I HIGHLY reccommend him.
