I've cooked for long enough (was a chef for 10yrs) to understand what flavours compliment each other and what styles of cookery best suit the type of food being prepared; so tend to let the whims take over and have fun with it :)

I pretty much read the recipe especially if I am making something for the first time...but if I think of anything to improve it the next time then I still read it but add whatever it was that I thought of...now sometimes I do not read the instructions to say constructing bookcases! LOL

for the most part, I never use a recipe, I just put stuff in and taste it. If I have never made something before, I will follow the recipe, but if it doesn't taste good, I add. On cookies, pies, and breads I follow the recipe, especially on bread.
Course, my chili and spaghetti sauce never tastes the same each time I make it.

Totally make it up as I go along. I start cooking soup, spaghetti, chili beans and I just add what I feel like. I have been poor and had to make the best out of what I have had so it has become the way I cook. Now, cookies or breads I have to follow the directions. Even hamburger helper I fool around with.

I read the recipe to get the basic gist of what needs to be done, the I sort of do my own thing. If I am baking, I stick with the recipe like my life depends on it.

Make it up as I go along. Usually turns out better than a recipe. Trouble is, you can't prepare it exactly the same way twice "from scratch".

I go strictly by the recipe, if It's something I care, how it turns out. I do like to experiment sometimes though.

I read the recipe and will improvise and adlib as needed. I just hate to buy certain ingredients that I know that I will only use once.
