Australia was asked by the government of the Republic of Vietnam for assistance. Vietnam was split into north and south Vietnam, and the south (slightly larger with more people) was under attack from the north. Legally speaking, Australia was authorised to send troops to fight in Vietnam, as it had the local government's permission, and the Republic of Vietnam was a legitimate state.

Australia was concerned that if South Vietnam fell to communism, other countries in the region would fall too. China was seen as the main worry (see the 'domino theory'). Australia would then be isolated in Asia. However, by the war's end things had changed - Southeast Asia was beginning to modernise and thus communism had lost its appeal, while China spent much of the 1960s in internal crisis and in the 1970s had actually become friendly to the US and hostile to Vietnam

There weren't any economic issue of substance.

The conservative government at the time was very supportive of the US in Vietnam. As on PM said "All the way with LBJ". This changed with a change in government in 1972 when the Labor Party withdrew Australian troops from Vietnam.
