Unless you have specific need for a laptop go for a desktop, more of everything for similar cost and you don't have to pay out for a flatscreen.
I've regretted it since I made the mistake of thinking I would save space etc but the reality is the laptop when connected to peripherals takes up as much room.
Having said that I am sitting in my armchair in front of TV with World Poker Tour on and laptop on my lap, you couldn't do that with a desktop!

laptops are not as powerfull as a desktop, you get more for your money with a desktop, also dont throw your existing computer away you should be able to salvage parts from it such as floppy drive, harddrive, cd/dvdrom drive etc. You could invest in a decent motherboard and perhaps a duelcore cpu then put all your salvaged parts in it, remember the mother board and cpu are the two most important parts effecting the overall performance of the computer, be careful going to a computer fair if you buy something and it doesnt work how are you going to find the guy and take it back?? they dont give receipts usually. beware on ebay to they are now selling dualcore systems, but if you read the specs you'll find alot of them are on an AGP motherboard, the latest and much better PCI express is what you want. Buy a couple of computer magazines such as custom pc and get yourself clued up on whats what, dont rush into it, hope this helps

I bought an Acer Aspire 5652 Laptop for 799 pounds 5 months ago. Its great for me - widescreen monitor, 120Gb H/D, Core Duo chip, Wireless for my broadband, separate graphics card (Geforce 7600). As i wanted to do online gaming, i wanted the graphics card - if its an integrated one it's pretty poor. I had a lot of trouble finding a laptop with a good graphics card for a reasonable price. Only Dell i think do a laptop where you can change the graphics card (otherwise you are stuck with the one installed when you buy)

Desktop...and go with Dell. Don't try their sales rep...they don't really know anything! If ever you need to upgrade, you'll have no problems with a desktop. Of course, if you travel, you'll want to get a laptop.
If not dell, try gateway..their even better.
Under no circumstances an HP
If it's a laptop, Gateway or Toshiba (even Dell's XPS showstopper looks nice)

I am currently labouring away on a note pad because I'm waiting for Vista with the new generation Intel and I cannot wait to be working with a tower again. I have seen some really good deals on Ebuyer where you can just buy the box and not a package deal

It depends on your priority.
Laptops are designed for mobility. you can work wherever you go, and stay in touch with people. This you can't do much with desktop pc, however, dekstops are much more powerful than laptops. desktops have bigger storage capacity, bigger memory, and faster cpu.
