that would be the decent thing to do
if money is an issue, humble yourself and ask him to let you pay it out
sh*t happens; but when it happens because of you, apologize and offer to pay for it.

He should have definitely been a little choosier about what he wore to class that day. Accidents do happen. However, the right thing to do is to pay him back for his loss. I would make sure you know exactly how much the shirt cost...not just what he tells you it cost, he may be giving you a line. I would also talk to your teacher about it. Let him/her know you want to do the right thing for your friend and let them know how much you regret it. The teacher might be a good mediator. Once you figure out the cost of the shirt, see if you can replace it for him, or perhaps pay him back in installments. It is too bad he is making such a fuss over it. But I am sure it would make you feel better to step up to the plate and do the right thing....whether it was an accident or not. And I am sure he would appreciate the gesture.

Of course you should pay him. It was an accident, you didn't mean to do it, but what is the cause of the top being ruined? You are. This is where you both get to find out what kind of people you are. Was the top new? If not, can he deduct something off the price for wear and tear? But if he won't, own up to your responsibilities. If someone accidentally hit your car and they said, "I don't want to pay, it's a lot of money" would you be OK with that?

It's only a shirt, he needs to just get over it. If he's so obsessive, I'm sure he has other stuff to wear. If you had ruined something highly expensive like a laptop, I'd say you need to pay for it. But it was an accident... and he is your friend after all.

NO

If it was genuinely an accident then you shouldn't pay anything.

If he is so clothes obsessed he should have worn something over the top while doing art class

If you are independently wealthy by all means pay him for the shirt or buy him a new one. If you can't afford it just tell him you are sorry. Anybody with any sense wouldn't wear a 'good' shirt when working with ink.

only pay for it if money won't be an issue if your struggling with money just apologize and tell him your short on money and can't pay for it. but if you have the money be a better person and pay for it or at least offer to have the stain removed
