Indian is a word used to refer to people from India - ie like how Americans is used to refer to people from America and French for people from France etc. So, I would imagine it would offend Sri Lankan people to be called Indian.

Hindu is a word given to someone who follows the religion of Hinduism. It is a word denoting religious faith such as Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, atheist, Sikh etc So, if a Sri Lankan person is a Hindu then that would be a truthful statement but if not then it is highly offensive.

I don't know if Sri Lanka is a hindu country but I believe it may well be so you could call Sri Lankans as a group Hindus in the same way that you can call Americans Christians but you have to recognise that is not they reality for everyone. Some people even find this way of calling people from a country with a specific religion followers of said religion offensive.

what do you mean by i?

U definetly cannt call an Indian.... Chinese or Arab and nor can u call Indians as whole Muslim or Christian.

Anyway like wise.... its as simple as that.... they would rather prefer being called Sri Lankan or Sinhalese. And they r definetly not a part of India. Like many other neighbours of India... say Thailand, Phillipines, Burma, etc they have also dervied many things from Indian Culture and tradition. So based on that you cannt call them Indian or Hindu .And i think we should respect every countries individuality rather than calling them a part of other countries. India sure wont be happy being called a part of China or say Pakistan.

And Hindu............. Hinduism is a religion and is not the only religion in the world. Buddhism is also a major part of Sri Lanka. So u cannot call a Sri Lankan... Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, or Christan as a whole, they are individuals.

I............. does that mean YOU????

Seriously............. u gotta be kidding.....

India is a country. I dont think Sri Lankans would like to be known as people from a country which they are not from.
Hinduism is a religion. Not all people from Sri Lanka are Hindu-there are also Muslims and Christians there.
I think they would prefer to be called Sri Lankan.
