I do. I never did before, but a month ago we noticed our window by our front door was lifted up and the screen was partially removed. I know leave the light on most of the time to scare off any would-be burglars. Sure it might cost a bit more on your electric bill, but I say it's worth it if you're safer.

I would do a combination of a couple of the recommendations that have already been made.
A porch light that's on would certainly indicate to me that someone wasn't home and I would think that a burglar would think that, too. So, what the burglar would do is to try to find a not so well lit part of the house and try to get in that way, such as an unlit side or back door.
When we had such a situation, when we lived in the city, we put the motion sensing lights around the house, so that no matter where someone went around the house the lights would come on. The only real drawback to this is that you'll have to play with the settings on these lights so that small animals such as cats won't trigger them on (this can potentially scare you since you'll wonder whether there's someone out there or if it's just a cat).
Keep your blinds or curtains shut at night so that no one can see where you're at in the house also.
Where we're at now, an outside light would give away that there's even a house here, it looks like a dark field with thickets at night.

No, I don't think it is safer. It usually indicates to a prowler or potential thief that someone is not home. You might try putting some solar lights around your porch. It will look attractive and you might be safer.
I always leave a very small (15 watt) lamp on near my living room window. Probably doesn't do much, just makes me feel better. My neighbor has commented that she notices I sure do stay up late at night (which I don't but she thinks the light is on because I am awake. So....
Whatever makes you feel safest.

I feel safe and I have 10 flood lights that come on automatically at night and go off at sunrise. There are no close neighbors, but even if I lived in town, I would want at least the fronch porch and back porch lights on.

if it makes you feel safer.....
we live in the country, and one of the things i like is how dark it gets at night, so i don't care for it on.
however we put up a motion sensitive light out by our shed, but other than stray possums and an occasional raccoon, we are usually the only ones who set it off!!!
we have a redneck security system,4 dogs sleeping on the porch, usually at least ONE will bark if someone comes around.

Thieves do not like lights. Dogs are an even better deterrent.
Keep in mind that these lights could easily bother your neighbors; if you can angle them down a bit, that will keep more light in your yard and less going in their windows.
Also, if you can find a fluorescent bulb, they will use less electricity. I have a few fluorescent flood lights out side and they make plenty of light.
A motion sensor will save power as well.

No this is a plenty extra desirable determent.. Burglars do no longer % to be considered, and in a community all and sundry is often coming and going. We do it and we even have action Censor lights fixtures. they only circulate on while somebody is shifting exterior the domicile. And who cares if the eletric bill is somewhat greater it relatively is properly worth it in easy of my families protection. you additionally can use LED lights fixtures they're so inexpensive to apply. So lower back no! additionally the law enforcement officers will inform you it is likewise a sturdy element to do, that it does help.

I like those motion sensors! Someone walks close and the lights come on!
Honestly though, I feel safe with or without lights on!
