Every driver that is listed is a very prominate driver in NASCAR,but these are the major winners and players. To find the most influential driver(s) you need to look at the first drivers from the begining of NASCAR they layed the ground work for the racing to day.In the 50's the developement of the speedways and the drivers like the Flock Brothers and Teagues et al .The 60's brought NASCAR into light of the public with Lorenzen,Cotton Owens,Littlte Bud Moore ,The Petty ledgen. Then the 70's with the Allison's ,Earnhardt,Waltrip which brought us into the 80's Gordon,Bodine's,Burton's ect.The young guns in the 90's brought new blood to NASCAR replacing some of the ledgens.
As a race fan I can not pick any one for there are too many.

I would have to say Dale Sr. As much as I beleive Richard Petty was very influential, Dale Sr. gets the nod. He took NASCAR to the masses. The France family knows enough to thank Dale Sr. for his contributions to the sport.
I was at Daytona International Speedway the night they held the candlelight vigil in his honor. There were 1000 people there at minimum, and not a dry eye. It was very quiet and subdued. Your could see the tears, hear the sobbing and feel the grief. It was an incredible experience.
I realized that night how much one man meant to his sport.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. brought in more fans for NASCAR and was the major reason for the increased popularity of the sport over the past 15 years or so.
Petty was very good as well but Dale Sr. did more to increase the number of people who became fans of NASCAR.

A toss up between Dale Sr and Richard Petty. I think though that if I had to chose just one, it would be Dale Sr. He bridged the gap between the old guard that used to race on the beach and on tiny little no-name tracks, and the Nascar of today, with all the young guys who think that they deserve the respect without earning it.
