I know its probably bad but I often wait to just before the red or the light comes on.

depends on what I have to do that week. Some weeks I let it go to an 1/8 of a tank, some weeks I have to fill up at 1/4 tank.

I "try" not to let the gas gage get below half. With the way the gas prices fluctuate, I don't want to get caught with an empty tank.
