Since your mare is 21, you should feed her a feed designed for senior horses. Check you feed store and ask what they have. Since I don't know where you live I don't know what types of hay you have available. Coastal/Bermuda is usually cheaper, at least it is in Florida, however with its fine leaves and stems it can cause impaction problems, instead feed a course hat like alfalfa or timothy/alfalfa mix. This has always worked for my seniors.
Good Luck.

Sweet feed or a sweet feed pellet mix. The pellets are a little easier to digest for older horses.

all they need in the winter is hay and grain or oats. they get this all year round and sometimes you should substitute the oats or grain for horse pellets..

I would give her sweet fed with a little suppliment to make sure she has engouh vitamins in her to keep her warm in the winter, if shes not fat enough, she will get to cold. so just make sure you give her some thing with fat suppliment in it or something like that in it hope i helped.

give her senoir feed, its really high in fat and stuff for the old horses, and unless she is really fat, you should feed your horse senior feed all year round.
good luck!
