My husband and I rented the movie Slapshot last night. I thought it was ridiculous. There were a couple of parts that were funny, but in my opinion it was the WORST hockey movie ever made. I'm not too big on slapstick comedy. I find it stupid. Not only was the movie bad for that reason, but I didn't care about or respect any of the players. It's not funny to see a player skating by the goalie and tripping him. Now, if the opposing team was screwing with them and trying to hurt their players I would have loved to see someone get their butt kicked. I could go on, but I owuld like to know your opinions on this movie and if anyone agreees with me that it was an awful movie that doensn't seem to know much about "true" hockey. Last, but not least the coach was also a player on the team?

Like I said, some parts are funny, but most of them aren't in the least bit funny. Some one posted something in here a few days ago stating that it was the best hockey movie ever made and I don't agree. It seems more like a 10 year old's brain comedy.
Are you guys reading the whole question???

When people see this movie they will see hockey players and fans as mindless idiots. People who just like to fight for the sake of fighting which is not the case and I don't know how long it will take or how many "fighting in hockey" answers there will have to be before get what's really going on. This movie gives hockey a bad name.

I agree with you. I thought the movie was stupid. Most people who know nothing about hockey watch this movie then think this is what hockey is really like . Which it is not. I like slapstick comedy but I thought the movie was lame. Some of it is funny. I like where the goalie is explaining the penalties.

It is considered a classic comedy and you have to realize it was made for that purpose.

I thought Strother Martin was great as the owner of the team and I liked his line when he called the team a bunch of pansies when they decided not to fight.

Some of the minor leagues had a lot of violence and some of the players were very close to what you saw in the movie in regards to the brawling and the drinking etc.

There were many playing coaches in the minor leagues back in the 50's and 60's

I saw it when it premiered in theaters and went back several times. I still think it's hilarious. The Hanson Brothers were a curious bunch but it's just a movie that was meant to entertain. Remember, it was the Flyers style of play that caused an uproar in hockey circles especially after they won the Stanley Cup. The movie was a parody of violence in the sport. One of my all-time favorite movies and that includes many highly respected ones and classics.

I had to watch it twice before it grew on me. Now, I love it. Especially the part where the owner of the Chiefs is telling Paul Newman about a guy he once coached who would get deliberate penalties so he could get into the box all by himself and masturbate. Watch the old man's facial expression. hilarious!

A classic..Old time hockey..was actually quite like playing in the old northern Ontario towns. Playing coaches was fairly common, and violence was a major part. I have been in a game where the hydro was pulled, and fans attacked us. We fought our way to the dressing room and had to escape via a window to cars, because the Police had to come about 40 miles and we didn't know if we would last.

I've got one view. In front of the TV every time I play the video. Love the movie since it came out when I was a teen. Sorry you didn't like it.

OMG, how can you not like that movie? You must be a breeder that is more worried about your kid seeing the movie and being "scarred for life." That was one of the best movies ever made. The only crap part was at the end when he took off all his clothes. That was dumb. But the rest was great.

I would not consider it a "hockey" movie. Mystery Alaska was better.

This is one of the funniest sports movies I've ever seen, along with Major League.
