My favorite thing to wear this pregnancy are the sweatpants that I got from Aeropostale. Although they don't have a maternity line, their sweatpants are awesome. Get the ones with the thick band around the top, it's great belly support. I just bought some more today, our Aero has them on clearance for $10.
I went to Target the other day to look at maternity clothes. I thought that they'd be cheaper, because you know - it's Target. No way! Target is more expensive than other stores I've seen. And Kohl's - personally, I think their maternity line needs improvement. Like a new designer line. I didn't realize that Walmart has a maternity dept, not in my area anyways.
In my area, we have a store called Destination Maternity. It's a Mimi Maternity & a Motherhood all in one. The new stuff can be pretty expensive, but they do have wonderful clearance. I found tons of shirts under $10, and they are nice, sexy style shirts too. They even have helpers who help find your size, and what clothes look good on you. They even help you buy clearance clothes. They don't care how much you spend, they don't get paid on commission.
Old Navy now has some pilot stores that sell maternity. You might want to call your local one and see if they carry it. Ours doesn't, but it does accept returns from online purchases and other pilot stores. I have found some pretty good prices on clearance.
Goodwill sometimes has good deals. But, it's hard to find. I've gotten lucky there before, but remember, the items are donated. I'm kinda mad at Goodwill right now, they don't have their $1.61 days anymore, and they didn't lower their prices either. I now sometimes have to pay more for a used shirt there, than a new one on clearance at Mimi.
Ebay can be good. I found a lot of outfits by chance, all business suits - and paid $1 for 8 suits plus $12 for shipping. All because the seller spelled maternity wrong in the item description title. When you do searches on Ebay, just use the drop down boxes on the left hand side of the page, and not do full word searches to get the best deals. Even your question is mispelled, just think of the auctions that you'll be missing, if you only searched on spelling!
As for what to buy for maternity clothes - I wore regular clothes & stretch jeans for many months. I got a couple good pairs of maternity jeans when I really started to show, and some babydoll shirts (they tend to be longer) that weren't even maternity.

I worked in maternity retail for almost a year, and I can tell you that your best bet will be going to Motherhood Maternity, Old Navy, Targets and Walmart. Do not go to any department stores. I'll tell you why.
At Sears for example, the maternity line there is called "Two Hearts Maternity". Motherworks Inc -who owns Motherhood Maternity, Mimi's Maternity and A Pea in A Pod- currently has a contract with Sears to have the Motherhood Maternity employees go in twice a week and take care of the Maternity section of their stores, which means they have an outside vendor who's NOT a Sears employee go and work in the stores. I actually did this for 5 months while working for Motherhood. And the same items at both Motherhood and Sears are differently priced. For example, Motherhood sells a bra called a nighttime nursing bra, and at Motherhood, you'll spend $11, but if you were to buy it at Sears, you'll pay about $15. Why? Because even though the products are from Motherworks Inc, Sears still has to make a cut. I'm sure this is the case with all department stores, they have outside vendors come and deal with the maternity section and their prices will be higher.
Also, don't go and buy every single item you see.At the most, you'll only wear them for nine months or even a little longer after you give birth. Get basics. I recommend one or two pairs of Jeans, black or Khaki colored dress slacks and maybe a basic black skirt, depending if you like to wear skirts or not. Then get a couple of t-shirts, some long sleeved, and then maybe a dressier top or two. Buy according to season, and think ahead. If you're due in early spring, then maybe consiter looking at the clearance to buy ahead. I'd recommend getting the under the belt maternity pants, since they are the most comfortable that I've seen. Also, when purchasing your maternity items, get the classic stuff that's always going to be instyle, like solid color t-shirts. That way, when you get pregnant again you'll still be in style. Just buy one or two items that are super trendy for a night out or whatever.
Anyone who says that Motherhood is expensive, they really don't know what they are talking about. Working in retail, I always checked out other people's prices, and from what I've seen, the prices are actually comparative prices. And its good quality stuff.
Oh, and if you have them in your area, consignment shops are actually better than thrift stores, since they sell clothes for people and then take a cut... the clothes are generally in better shape.

I didnt have much money to spend on maternity clothes either keeping in mind that they will only be able to be worn for 9 months. I found some really cute and cheap clothes at Ross or Marshalls. I also went to motherhood.com. Do not go into the store in your area as they are way to expensive, but if u go online u find really good deals and verrry cute shirts and pants etc. They even have diaper bags and pregnancy essentials. Target has SOME cute things but not much, maybe a shirt here or there but I never found anything that didnt look "old lady". Old navy, Ross, Marshalls and motherhood.com are all great if u are trying to save money. Good Luck!

I'd check out a few options before diving into retails stores.
Like infant clothing, maternity clothing doesn't get a lot of wear, so I'd look at used items, starting with your friends! If you have friends with style who have recently been pregnant, ask if you can borrow their clothes -- if they will not be pregnant at the same times as you, they will be thrilled to help you (I have loved helping out pregnant girlfriends with anything I can, but passing along those clothes once you don't need them anymore is particularly thrilling).
If this doesn't work, you can get stylist bargains on Craigslist (if you have an active Craigslist in your area), and followed by eBay. There are LOTS of cheap and nice "lots" of maternity clothes on eBay.
If you don't like online shopping, I'd see if there is a store that specializes in used maternity clothing in your area -- people who buy used maternity clothing to re-sell used are quite particular, and the clothing is stain free, from smoke free homes, and in excellent shape. Then I'd try the Goodwill or other standard second hand places.
I got all of my things used, from friends or on Craigslist. But whenever I went to Target or the Gap, I was amazed at what nice things they had (and a lot of the nicer used items I had came from one of these two stores). I was often tempted to buy from them!
Best of luck and have fun! Maternity clothes are a lot more fun than they used to be, and you can definitely look cute during your pregnancy and show off your growing self!

I went to the GoodWill and got me 4 pairs of maternity jeans for 4.50 each, they all look in great shape, and I found my size. I found only a couple of shirts and the rest of the shirts I have bought them in walmart, and other stores. The maternity stores like Motherhood sells awesome clothes but they are very expensive, however, I went to a ball when I was 18 weeks pregnant and I bought me an outfit in that store and it was beautiful. But if you are looking to save some money, the Goodwill or the thrift stores are good.

There's always the basic PacSun, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Aerosostale, Abercrombie, American Eagle, Suprisingly there's also JCpenny, Macy's, Nordstoms and Nordstoms Rack, and Old Navy has some cute T's. Just walk threw the mall and window shop.. Walk in if something catches your eye!
