i have one cable modem that has both a usb and ethernet port....can i use this one modem to get internet on both pc's without buying a Router or any other parts?

nope thats not possible unless that modem supports two enthernet ports.....you will have to go with a router or unless you want to unplug one ethernet and hook it up to the other and yeah...i would buy a router it has two more firewall built in ....go with wireless G or Wireless N

If the modem is doing address translation (your computer's address starts with 10, 172 or 192), all you need is a switch. If not you need a router (to do the address translation - they come with switches built in). Good switches usually cost more than a good router (because a good switch is commercial grade) so get a Linksys WRT54G router - it'll work regardless of which type of modem you have, it's top quality and it's cheap - $45. (It's also both wired and wireless.)

You can add USB port adapter,

But a router is not very expensive and works get, we run about 6 off of our one cable modem

At worst you can connect one directly to the cable modem then use ICS [internet connection sharing] to share it's connection with the other computer. But that requires the first machine to have 2 NICs whether they both be cable or one cable and one wireless....
