It depends on the situation. Is the person capable of seriously hurting you? If so, it's best to try to stun or distract them and try to get away. If you think your life is in danger, fight with everything you have. If it's a recurring bully situation, fight hard enough to make the bully think twice about hurting you again.
The best advice I can give you about a bullying situation is to stick with a group of friends. Safety in numbers. Don't be afraid to go to an adult for help.
If the person attacking you can't hurt you, try to figure out why he is striking out. Maybe you can calm him down and resolve the situation. It may be a misunderstanding.

Are you talking verbal or physical? My husband and I totally disagree on this one. I think you should fight back...defending yourself is a natural response and makes sense. Whether its hand to hand combat or just a war of words! Survival of the fit right?
My husband thinks that behaving aggressively or inappropriately is never okay...better to take the high road. I've actually seen his strategy work much better than mine...as he likes to remind me--an eye for an eye leaves the world blind. Also, people respond to his sense of inner calm and peace by calming down themselves. Even if they behave badly--when he does not respond the same way--they look so much worse and usually never repeat that behavior. Of course--if we are talking intruder attacking or something...all bets are off!

The answer is simple, and most seem to agree here that yes you fight back, it's called self defense. I would think if some one attacks you it's only natural reaction to fight back.

well i think again it all depends.
if someone came at me with a gun and a knife and was 50 feet away, unarmed I might think it better to run away.
if someone came at me from 5 feet away, some kind of self defensive action would be in order.
even then though, it depends. if it were my best friend, I may give him the benefit of the doubt that he's drunk and there's been a misunderstanding, so the defensive action may be more evasion. if it's a homeless drunk coming at me with a knife, then something more drastic may be in order since he's beyond reason.

If they attack you physically, I would say yes. Verbally, maybe not. If they attack your reputation in a way that is going to have an effect on your job, yes. If is just someone talking smack to other people who have no power, let it go.

Physically or verbally? Physical attacks need to be countered to protect youself. Verbal attacks are best ignored. The more you say, the worse it will get.

It depends. Some occasions call for defense, while in others, the best solution is to walk away. It's our nature. We have two reactions: fight or flight.
