Not sure where it originated, but Mark Cuban, the Mavs owner made it Fantasy B-Ball hot about 8-10 years ago and the others caught on soon after. Thats how he made his millions. He was just a regular guy, just like me and you until he put two and two together.

The game originated in 1962 from an idea of Bill Winkenbach, then a Raiders limited partner, with assistance from Bill Tunnell, the Raiders' public relations man, Scotty Stirling, the beat writer from the Oakland Tribune, and George Ross, the Tribune's sports editor, as well as Philip Carmona, Winkenbach's friend. The idea emerged from a three-week road trip the Raiders took to the East Coast. Winkenbach and the others fleshed out the idea during the trip, and upon their return, formed the first fantasy football league, the GOPPPL (Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League).

Not sure who actually invented it....but it has been around for a couple decades at least. I am in a league that has been going strong for 16 years now. Keeper league with 10 of the original 12 managers still playing.
Thank goodness for the puter and the world wide web...it was a pain in the rear keeping track of everything with pen and paper and getting the stats out of the newspapers for the first few seasons.

In 1862 ... Ben Franklin was working on the light bulb when he fell and hit his head in the bathroom. He immediately made a sketch of what was described as the "Flux Capacitor". When his nephew "Marty" laid eyes on the capacitor drawing , he suggested that they keep stats on everything from horse racing to rooster fighting. Fantasy sports was born !
