A truly great comedy series isn't dated. I remember watching the Young Ones when it first came out and I thought it was brilliant. I saw it again a few years later and it was pathetic. Totally dated.
Comedy series which aren't dated and are still as funny now as when they were first aired for me are:

Only Fools and Horses
Friends
Seinfield
The Simpsons
Open all hours

Something wrong here. American humour 3, British humour 2.
Right... Really good series include:

The Royales
Little Britain
Rising Damp
Porridge
One foot in the Grave (I can't stand it, but it's British)
Man about the House
Love thy Neighbour (When being politically correct meant voting for the party that won the election)

I would include "Have I got News for You" as being one of the funniest humour programmes ever shown, but as it isn't a comedy series, it doesn't count.

Operation Goodguys.

A fictional police fly on the wall documentary that ran over 3 series in the UK during the late 90s. Totally under-rated and not seen by a lot of people due to it being shown on some random satellite channel, UKplay or something like that.

True comic genius, well ahead of the Office etc. for its time.

You can buy all 3 series on DVD.

Clarence.

Ronnie Barker only made one short series. He played a very short sighted old man. It has never been repeated on TV (or that I am aware of). It was Hilarius and I can not understand why it's not up there with the classics.

Since so many don't seem to notice this is under "Comics and Animation", I'll say The Simpsons. I love Family Guy, South Park and all the rest, but The Simpsons started it all as far as cartoons for adults on prime time TV.
