I find it hard to decide whether it would be worse not to hear my kids talking or see their beautiful faces!

Deaf...id rather see then hear

Well since I already am legally blind, the choice is rather easy I wouldn't want to be deaf.

Most blind people aren't totally blind where they see nothing at all. Many blind people can see colour and shape ,some detail so you can actually get along in the world fairly easily.

However if I was deaf I'd never hear birds sing or soft flow of a mountain stream or children's sweet voices in a choir or conversations with people. I know there are hard of hearing people who can speak and hear somethings, but for me not being able to hear or talk would be a real hardship. But then again there is the deaf culture where with asl deaf people can have conversations and be expressive .

Each disability has its' pro's and cons I guess.

supposedly, it is much worse to be deaf than blind, because blindness doesn't limit your communication skills that much. You can still talk and listen. Deafness, though, severely limits your ability to easily communicate with most of the population, and that really makes life a challenge. If I lost my eyesight, I would take it tough. I'd probably take a job as a radio DJ, though, I know a guy who has a very successful career doing that and I have the connections to get into the business. If I went deaf, though, I would probably go mad. I wouldn't be able to handle the isolation and life change.

i would rather be deaf than blind. when your blind you cant see what is going on in society, or even whats happening. but when your deaf you cant hear what every one is saying about each other, and the world. you cant hear the conflict between people that goes on to affect others in the mere future. deaf is better because you cant hear the problems of the world screaming at you to do something.

It is a difficult one. But all in all I would have to say that being deaf would be my 'choice' over blindness. As previous answerers have stated, not being able to see my child grow up would be far more distressing to me than not being able to hear her words - and there are other ways of communicating. I'd choose seeing her beautiful face over hearing her beautiful voice (which at 3 is soooo cute, and whingey in equal measure!!)

deaf, people's voices get irritating, but the world is pretty. I would rather be able to see the people around me, and instantly recognise them, than just be able to hear them. Also, it would make things like crossing the road, and just walking down the street easier, as you would not have to rely on your hearing alone, and sight is better than hearing in todays world.

The majority of people (in a recent survay) said that they would prefer to have some form of curable cancer than go blind. I think that how you see and relate to things is such a part of who you are, that people are scared of losing that.

I think i would rather be deaf, as at least you could learn a new way to comunicate and have a chance to still speak to your kids and everybody else. Also you would still have frames of reference to things like people ageing or peoples expressions and reaction. Being blind would be harder i think as i personally would feel more isolated

I'm hard of hearing but I get by in life. I would not like to be deaf but it would definitely be preferable to being blind and living in total darkness.

Funny enough, I have often reflected on this, I guess because my eyesight is not what it should be this lately, and my hearing has been effected by a very bad ear infection. I think most certainly I would like to keep my eyesight, I paint, read, watch TV, adore simply watching my grandchildren playing, and people watching. I know many folks who have learnt to lip read, I guess the one thing I would miss, is listening to the radio, Classic FM, I would not miss my husband telling me he loves me, because he says it in everything he does and in his eyes, bless. Eerrrm got carried away there, yes DEAF most certainly
Its a beautiful world, I really would miss not seeing it!.

I would rather be deaf, as much as I love to listen to music or hear the voices of my children, I HAVE to see colors and landscapes and my children's faces. I have to know what's going on around me with my vision, plus, If I went deaf now, I already have music memorized, so I can just remember it and sing it to myself.
