Word Processing, you just need a template
Then convert it to Adobe

Creating a book with OpenOffice.org Writer
OpenOffice.org Writer uses templates to store the initial formatting of a document. If you plan to use Writer to write your next book, you will need a good book template, or rather several, for the different components of your book. This article walks you through the process of creating a complex book template that includes front matter (copyright, acknowledgments, and preface), table of contents, chapters, appendixes, and an alphabetical index -- all assembled into a master document...............
* Index: Must be created in the master

My favorite program is Word for Windows. I've used other word processing programs but I find Word the easiest to use and the most widely used.

I mostly just use wordpad, to write short stories and such. But word perfect is better for keeping track of pages, and adding borders and numbers and stuff.

The best program I have found is WriteItNow software. It helps you tremendously in keeping things straight while writing. Helps with not having to cut and paste a lot. Lets you start wherever, not limiting you to start in the beginning.
