Some say education is essential for a good career, others say it takes street smart to climb the ladder. Aside from the extreme cases (bill gates and some 37 yrs old PHD jobless). What do you really think? How important is it to have a college degree?

In general, I would say its at least an least 8.

I have an Associates Degree and lots of great on the job experience.

I've been checking out the job market, and its amazing how many employers require a 4 year degree in my profession. I've been told that many toss out the resume and never look at it...simply because that is their criteria. I have no doubt that is true, based on what I am seeing. I think its a crock (given my years of experience)...I am very well qualified in what I do, but I'm not even getting the interview.

I've done very well, but if I had to do it again I'd get the 4 year degree (and I still may go back and do that).

Yes, people can be successful simply with a High School diploma...but I think that is the exception, not the rule.

It depends on the field, which determines how much education you need. But most high-paying jobs, if that's how you determine success, require a significant amount of appropriate education. This might be a PhD for a college professor, an MD for a physician, a B.S. or M.S degree for a computer programmer or teacher, or an apprenticeship for an electrician or plumber. But to get a job that pays well, you likely need some kind of education.

Even if you start your own business, so there isn't an employer requiring specific education, you'll need to know basic management, basic accounting, and a lot about the business you're in.

So I'd say 7-8 on a 1-10 scale as how much appropriate education helps.

These days, a college degree is what it's all about. A high school diploma just doesn't cut it anymore. I would have to rate education as an 8. The other two points go towards your ability to "sell' yourself. You can be a very intelligent person, but if you have the wrong attitude. That can ruin your chances to climb up that corporate ladder.

Your college degree will make a large part of the choice for most jobs that you will apply for. however, just having a good sense of motivation and always being a forward thinker, hard working and all that, will also have a significant effect. however, when you want to get hired, you want to stand out among your peers, and since many people with well paying jobs have degrees, it would be a good idea to have a degree also. but always be positive and have faith in your abilities. I would rate the importance as a 7 but it goes up every year.
