Many of those hot spots are using a service which requres you to pay a monthly fee. Others are totally free...

Connecting is a matter of enabling the wireless card then viewing available wireless networks and connecting. The coffee shop I prefer, and my employer, require customers to use a pass phrase [WEP encrypyted] but give that pass phrase freely. Others are completely unsecured.

Before using public access via any method, patch your operating system and be sure you have a firewall and virus protection.

Search Yahoo for the phrase "war driving" to find a list of wireless hotspots where ever you plan to be with your laptop...

I don't think that Starbucks' connection is free. So you will have to notify them to get into their network. But yes the laptop will automatically see the connection if you have a wireless card in it. When you buy the laptop I would highly recommend paying the extra $50 or so to have the internal wireless card built in the computer.

PS I like Panera for a free wifi connection.

Your laptop will connect but some hot spots will require you to be a member. This may be as simple as buying a 1 time access card which has a password and userid for that occasion or else taking out a subscription which you may or may not fully use.

In some places it's free, some places you need a passcode because it's secure, other places you have to pay for it. most new laptops now with automatically recognize it, you just have to choose the wireless connection.
