Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic

WORD HISTORY: The combination Gothic romance represents a union of two of the major influences in the development of European culture, the Roman Empire and the Germanic tribes that invaded it. The Roman origins of romance must be sought in the etymology of that word, but we can see clearly that Gothic is related to the name Goth used for one of the Germanic tribes that invaded the Roman Empire. The word Gothic, which is first recorded in 1611 in a reference to the language of the Goths, was extended in sense in several ways, meaning “Germanic,” “medieval, not classical,” “barbarous,” and also an architectural style that was not Greek or Roman. Gothic, originally in the sense “medieval, not classical,” was applied by Horace Walpole to his novel The Castle of Otranto, a Gothic Story, published in 1765. From this novel, filled with scenes of terror and gloom in a medieval setting, have descended the Gothic romances of today.

I'm guessin it comes from the germanic people who lived around the time of the romans and were called satanic, dark people who, according to the romans, were plotting the destruction of all things good (Propaganda worked a lot easier back then.) they were called the visi-goths....but honestly, i am not sure...this is a wild guess.

Edit: *looks at guys post above* O.o...kool, looks like i was right! Wow, I feel smart now.

Having been there, done that I would say the real definition is "a phase many teens go through to freak their parents out or physically demonstrate on the outside how confused they are inside."

I know I'm going to get berated by goths now but seriously, been there, done that.

And that definition above is lovely, yet pertains to architecture, art, and literature. The goths I knew were hardly into things Germanic or relating to Goths.

I am not excactly sure, but i think that it means that most of them arn't really spiritual, religios, or happy, they are more of depressed and sad. That is why they wear black. Also, they are mourning, and i think that they believe in a dark after-life and like death.(if any of u r goths, I am not meaning to offend you - so i'm sorry if this is offending.)
