I am a conservative. I'm wondering if anyone else thinks there might be some benefit to voting for democrats in national races on tuesday. I'm struggling with this, please help me out. My reasons:

* I have no moral objection to the Iraq war-- just think from a cost/benefit standpoint, we're not getting what we want, and think we need to find a graceful way to bring our troops home.
* Bush has let spending get out of control.
* We have a safety net since Bush still controls the white house, instead of '08, when we risk everything.
* I firmly believe that Democrats will do no better, leaving Republicans a source of blame going into the '08 elections.
* Bush's initiatives towards evangelicals are halfhearted, more to shore up the base than because they are valued.
* Bush claims to be a conservative, but is better characterized as a Republican; the distinction is disappointing. Think Reagan vs. Nixon.

Good question, and I've thought the same but for different reasons. Since this is a mid-term election, I think we may be better off letting the Dems take control of the house and senate... then we can see what kind of laws they'd attempt to pass while they got a chance and by 2008, we'll be pleading to get another repub in the white house and give the house and senate back!

I'll address your highlighted points, though, from my perspective:

*if we pull out without a better alternative plan, we loose the war totally and give terrorism a booster shot.
*spending is not as bad as it seems. Rate of increase to our GNP is higher than the rate of increase to our deficit, netting a positive trend in our debt.
*agree with the safety net totally. The Dems will probably win control of house/senate but nowhere near enough to override presidential veto with a 2/3 vote.
*agree with Dems doing no better as well.
*not really an opinion on evangelicals.
*I believe Bush IS conservative... just not extreme right wing conservative. I don't think moderation is bad because we do need to find some common ground with the liberals. We're too evenly divided not to.

My 2 cents. Good question!

I am glad to see there are some intelligent conservatives. The cost/benefit standpoint is at least honest, but whatever it takes to end this, I'm for it. And as a result of the war, the spending will reach $10 trillion shortly, if it hasn't surpassed that yet. Talk about raising taxes. Sheesh, can you see the democratic party getting away with a $10 trillion tax hike? Your point about the blame game in the '08 elections is well taken. Yes, and then there's the religion vote. Can't argue with any of your points.

You have answered your own question. You didn't state anything that was a positive for George. What are the detriments to returning the Republicans to control in congress? Two more years of the same you have had for the last four years. Spending out of control, our troops still dying in Iraq, more likely the Democrats will take both houses of congress and the presidency in 2008, main issues will be disregarded while congress debates gay marriage vs. gay unions, abortion, new legislation on how we will try terrorists and whether they will be entitled to know the evidence against them, more nuclear tests in Korea, more Abramhoff scandals, higher health costs, nothing done on social security, nothing done on the environment, no energy policy and high gas prices.......

In case you are not aware of what will take place if the dems win, there will be an immediate elimination of all the tax breaks that were installed; there will be many changes in the fight against the terrorists; the list goes on and on.. if that is what you want to take place, then vote for them..Otherwise, use some common sense and realize what is taking place globally as well as at home.

You sound more like a Democrat trying to convince Republicans to vote Democrat. My Mom always said better to keep what you have than guess on what you will get. I do not believe the Democrats have anything to offer. They have spent their entire campaign in my state telling us what is wrong with Republicans.
What do they plan to do? Who knows, they never said. President Bush is not up for election - I want to know how the newly elected will vote not that they do not like Bush.

I'm angry too. The GOP promised me certain things I wanted and has delivered on only a few of them.

But the Dems promise to UNDO all the things I want and to DO the things I DON'T want.

I'll give you two reasons to vote GOP:

1) Tax cuts.

2) John Paul Stevens is something like 80 years old.

In my opinion - whoever votes for Republicans - they should go to war in Iraq and Afganishtan and replace our troops by bringing them home.

No. The benefit is to vote Republican and help keep the weasels out. Those people are deplorable, and they are the LOWEST common denominator.

Dont be crazy.
