If you can tell me, if i do end up having to replace the whole darned tank, how hard of a job is that? Can I do it? (not the most experienced home repair guru) Are toilet tanks standard, meaning will any toilet tank fit any toilet? I know, that's more that one question, HELP!!!

Bad News...They don't sell lids separate
Worse News... You will have to change out the toilet tank itself
The Worst Situation...Your toilet is too old and they don't make a tank for it anymore meaning you will need a completely new unit.
Good News...Very simple project...shut off the water to the toilet and drain the tank...get SEVERAL old towels and place them around the toilet on the floor. remove the packing nut holding the water line on...remove the two bolts that hold the tank in place to the base...the tank may be held on with age so give a little tug and free up the gasket...(this is where the towels come in)...get the tank to the tub to finish draining the water that is in it. Simply reverse the steps in installing the new tank...make sure you use a new gasket and bolts.
The Best News...have your wife switch to cast iron frying pans to discipline you with...they are much more resilient and available on the cheap at any yard sale for a couple of bucks...but I would wear a helmet around the house if you get out of line...

Unless it is new you will not find one. Even new, you would have to special order it from the manufacturer. The model and type is listed on the inside of the tank, ( stamped into the porcelain.) Problem is, they do not make extra tank lids. You would pay as much for a tank lid as you would a new tank. Cheap way out.....cut a piece of wood 1/4" bigger than the tank and let that sit on top. ( this is the CHEAP way out, not the correct way.) Some plumbing companies MAY have a lid hanging around collecting dust, but that is slim to none. With todays economics they keep the inventory as low as possible throwing out old unusable parts. BUT, all they can say is no! Worth a try.

You will have a hard time finding a tank cover that will fit properly. As far as changing the tank, you can bye one and it is not hard at all to install. You can even go on the internet to see how it is done. Install donut ring between tank and bowl. Install bolts according to the instructions that come with the tank. Make sure you purchase a tank lid for the bowl you have. American standard, Kohler i.e. The name of the unit is stamped on the bowl usually at the rear of the bowl opening. Lift the seat you'll find it.

Unfortunately, the lids are not sold separately. If you have a small mom and pop hardware store around, check there. Sometimes they get a bargain buy, for a truck load of merchandise,and end up with extra lids from broken toilets. Also, you CAN change the tank by yourself.It's easy. I can do it,You can do it. Just be sure to get a tank compatible with your toilet make.(their all different)

Just find a tank that is the same as yours, buy it and just use the lid. Why replace the tank if the lid fits. You'd wind up with an extra tank either way.

I feel for you. Had the same thing when I bought my condo,a canary yellow lid broke . I found one in a salvage yard that demoed houses.Sometimes a plumbing supply has some lying around.You do need the name of the tank or if the other bathrooms is the same take it with you to match it up.

lol ok try lowes or you local salvage yard, not all toilet are standard ,mesure the old and take this not with you to lowes, ,if all else fails,
turn of the water under tank, undo the two main bolts,replace them, they come in twos ok, you going to need a wax ring ,comes in a box, this keeps the water, from comeing out from under your toilet i buy two wax rings,only about $1,25 each.because it mite not sit right the first time, you will need help lifting it into place not heavy,just a pain by your self.andtoilets they cost in a box ready to fit for about $160.00.i m sure you can do this ,it comes with note s how to. ask you local lowes im sure they will help you.most remodelers would cost say about $85 to fit one. good luck

very rare but some second hand stores or some plumbing supply stores do have some tossed aside...it just takes some phone calls and some luck.....
