It is true that two strokes are out because of EPA. It was said that soon landscapers still using two strokes, or not will have to keep log books to show amount of hours used, you know this wont work because it'll force them only so many hours, limiting them the amount of revenue to be made. Also Harley was forced to create a water-cooled engine also because of EPA. A fight for those who care for there hobbies to dispute through legislation.

Two stroke off road bikes are still legal in the eyes of the EPA under the "For Competition Use Only" clause. The only reason that they are in jeopardy with the factories is due to the sales numbers. Right now the thumpers are just flat out selling the 2 strokes, even though for the average rider/mechanic a 2 stroke is easier to go fast on and requires less maintenance.

As for the pollution issue, the simple fact is that the only time a 2 stroke emits more pollution into the atmosphere is when stock, unmodified vehicles are compared & tested. But who do you know that is riding a thumper stock? 99% of them have aftermarket pipes and have richer jetting. At that point the 'emissions friendly' four stroke is dirtier than ANY hopped up two stroke.

We're just in a cycle of history repeating itself, and you can count on a 'new generation' of 2 stroke for off-road use emerging in the future. I suspect it will be fuel injected and use internal engine parts that allow the use of extremely lean fuel/oil mixtures. Old timers will remember the CR250 dubbed the 'EXP' (if memory serves) back in the late 80's, early 90's that won it's class in Baja while utilizing a 100:1 fuel/oil ratio.

Guardrail and Nomad both have great answers, but I think that marketing has alot to do with it, 4 strokes are more expensive in every sense of the word, plus they use a whole new host of accessories an performance mods, Two strokes can be less poluting and more efficiant, if properly engineered, to prove this, check out the specs on Evenrudes new E-Tec Outboards that just blow their 4-stroke competition away in every catagory, including EMISSIONS! Two strokes fire twice as ofter as four strokes, by their very design they are more efficiant, anyone who has riddin a 70s model kawasaki H2 750 triple, or 80s model yamaha RD 350 will tell you, they are CRAZY FAST

They still make them. It's just that the stupid EPA will not allow them to be imported to the US.
It's a proven fact that a 2 stroke engine with "direct injection" emits less Co2 & hydrocarbons than 4 stroke engines of equal size. There are a couple of American marine manfacturers (Mercury is one) that are using this "clean 2 stroke technology" and they meet 2004-6 emissions standards and beyond.

I think its stupid, I also am a two stroke owner and fan. I went to supercross and the four strokes backfire and die and are very hard to start, my eyes were burning by the time it ended from the oil burning. Whoever thought of banning two stroke productions is a stupid person. The four strrokes have way too many bugs still.

I think it is a good idea to discontinue them, because of the total Oil loss system causes too much Polution.
