I wrote this dream down after I woke up this morning. It's the most complex and sensical dream I ever have remembered having. I've told it as a story, so don't get weirded out by that. All of the details in the story were actually in the dream: I didn't add anything in, just left some stuff out that I can't remember. NOTE: I WILL HAVE TO POST THIS IN SEVERAL 'ADDITIONAL DETAILS' PARTS, so be patient as I get it all out here.
MY DREAM:
I walked down the stone path away from the great building. The meeting of my military command corp was in just ten minutes, but I had to get away for a bit. I strolled down to the river, still within sight of the tall building. Two figures were by the metal railing that ran along the edge of a small cliff above the river.

As I came up to them, I saw that it was the princess, and the father of one of the lieutenants of my units, a former warrior himself, now retired with little to do. He was laying back in the sun, and the princess was sitting against the railing facing him. She was quite beautiful, with dark hair running past her shoulders, and a pretty face.
I stood by the man, and answered the princess's query, telling her that I was due back any time, but didn't feel like heading to the meeting quite yet. She smiled at me and I joined the conversation. They were discussing God, though I do not remember the specifics well now. The old man was questioning some issue of our faith, and I supported the princess in defending it. As he went on, I walked behind him to the railing, and with the princess throwing amused glances at me, I made gestures suggesting I flip the old man over into the river.

Then as the old man's foolish raving truly did begin to border on blasphemy, I leaned forward and may have slapped him, my memory fails me. “That is too far. I will not have you utter blasphemy of our God!” He sobered up a little then to me, and I could feel the princess's support from my back. She had always taken great store in such things.
What happened then was a bit confusing, as many of Medusa's enchantments are; and looking back I have no doubt that this was one of them. I had walked back to the railing, both of the others behind my back. Suddenly, I lost my balance. I do not know if the old man pushed me, but I do not know how else I would have pitched over the iron railing down into the river swirling past below the cliff.

I came up sputtering in the deep water, and the princess bobbed up beside me, gasping for air. The old man was gone. Then, before we could even say a word, something caught us. They were great metal contraptions of metal bars, spinning in the water, ensnaring us and pulling us down deep, deeper into the water. I lost all sense of orientation, spinning about in the water, snared on the outside of the trap. Finally, I managed to kick partially off of it, and thought my head cleared enough for me to feel which way was up.
Up was straight through the metal bars above me. Kicking violently, I managed to free myself from the trap, and fought my way through the water around the side of it, avoiding bars trying to impede my progress. I reached the top of it and kicked off, swimming for the surface.

Some twenty feet later, I broke out of the water and desperately gasped in breath, swimming for the edge of the cliffs. I saw the princess above water too: she had managed also to get free. She signaled me, and I suddenly realized that we had both lost our packs, bags of vital equipment.
Without hesitation, I swum back down into the dark, cloudy waters. I was totally blind in the depths below, grasping and feeling through the cold water. Then my fingers found a strap, and I held tight, pulling it to the surface. I thought it was one of our packs, but doubt ran through my mind as to whether it was the princess's.
When I came up and pulled it above the water, I saw that it was mine. Not ten feet away the princess came up with hers. We both made for the cliffs, and huddled there, trying to hold ourselves onto the vertical rock surface without being swept away by the current. We held a quick conference as to our course of action, keeping our heads and shoulders above the river.

There was no way we could scale the cliffs and make it back into our land. “We have to follow the river downstream through Medusa's mazes,” the princess said. “It is the only choice we have to get out.” I nodded, and we both looked at the cold water rushing through gorge and shuddered, not wanting to start. Her dark wet hair was plastered in strings against her pale face. I took her head in both my hands and turned it to face me. Then I kissed her. I held it for a few seconds, then we broke off, a bit breathless. “Now,” I said. “Let's be off.”
We navigated downstream, watching all the time for a way to get out of the cold river. At last, we saw a small outlet leading into a smaller gorge, filled with shallow water.
“This is the way out,” the princess said. We clambered out of the bone-chilling river and stood in the knee-deep water. The princess removed something from her pack, and nodded towards the dark gorge ahead.

“That is the way into Medusa's stronghold, but it is the only chance we have of getting out. The places in there are bewitched, and we will need a strong enchantment to get through them.” She re-shouldered her pack and hand something to me. It was a pen.
“I have put a powerful enchantment into this,” she said. “You will know how to use it when the time comes.” I nodded. We both knew that the princess understood enchantments better than I, but that I was the warrior. So carrying the small pen ready in my right hand, I led the way into the narrow puddles of water.
Soon we came to a place that we both recognized from tales. Shallow green pools were interspersed between small rocks, and though we could see nothing moving, we knew that Medusa's eels waited for travelers in the water.

The princess was lost in meditation for a moment, pondering the enchantment placed over the pools. At last she opened her eyes and said, “The magic governing these eels has fixed them on you as a target. As soon as we step into their water, they will swarm on you.”
I nodded. “What feature are they using to identify me?”
She thought for a moment, then said, “They seem to have given a picture of your legs, moving through the water. But the picture is very specific, and we might be able to confuse it. You have a short tunic reaching to your knees, and below that your legs our bare. My skirt reaches my ankles, and they will not go after me when we enter the water.”
So, we improvised a skirt for me. I pulled off my soaked jacket and tied it about my legs to imitate a skirt. A very, very simple thing, one that would seem silly to some, but only the princess could have understood the exact need to confuse the eels.

We crossed the rock pools without a single eel stirring, and reached the entrance to a dark corridor. As we stepped inside, it was if we could almost smell the stench of her presence. She was near. We walked down the passage, and saw ahead of us three doors opening to the sides, two to the right, and one to the left.
Then we sensed her behind us and spun about. She stood there in the shadows of the corridor grinning evilly at us. She was in the form of an old, hideously ugly man, robed and hooded in black, and in her hand she held a pin.
“Hello,” she said, looking straight at me. “What are you hanging on to that pen for so desperately? You do not think that something so small will be any good against me?”
I could feel the dark power of her magic, and wavered for a moment, before gathering my courage and replying, “If a small thing cannot be so powerful, then why do grasp that pin?” She did not respond in word, but suddenly began moving toward us, pin upheld.

Terrified, we dashed down to the one door that opened to the left. Inside we found a large chamber with a raised ledge of stone on the far side. Wooden boards of all sorts of games were scattered across the floor. Realizing they were magic, I snatched one of them up for a shield. The princess pulled herself atop the wide stone ledge away from the door, and I positioned myself to the right of the opening, pen and board ready.
Medusa stepped into the room and cackled at us. She now was beginning to look like an old woman, still hideously ugly. Then perhaps ten of her servants rushed in, powerful armored warriors, shielded from all types of basic magical attacks. Two rushed towards me, the rest scaled the ledge after the princess. Trusting her to take care of herself, I kicked down the two men that came towards me and advanced towards Medusa.

She cackled shrilly at me. “Think you that you can get past MY magic?” Then she let loose a terrible blast of fire from her hands at me. I raised the board, and stumble back under the impact, feeling the heat sear my face; but the board was still intact.
This took Medusa aback for just a moment, but then she turned and gestured to the stone ledge. “You may be able to protect yourself, but what about your princess? She has no shield!”
I turned and saw the princess on the stone ledge, surrounded by Medusa's armored servants, holding them all back with enchantments. Then Medusa let loose an incredible barrage of fire at the ledge, and I saw the princess dive and roll to the side as she loosed the warriors from her enchantments.

As the ledge disappeared in rolling smoke and flashing fire, I turned and rushed at Medusa. She did not see me coming until the last moment, so intent was she on destroying the princess. I leaped at her, stabbing down with my pen, but suddenly a huge board appeared above her as she dropped to the ground. Determinedly I stabbed straight through it, and dark red blood welled up through the small hole in the board I had made. Again and again I stabbed through the board, and more blood came up through the punctures.
Suddenly, I became aware of the fact that with each stab, her magic was hurting me as much as I was hurting her. The pen I held broke, it all came on me in a wave, and I collapsed to the floor beside her body under the board. In a daze, I looked at the ledge and saw through the clearing air that most, if not all of Medusa's servants had been destroyed by her own magic. In a corner, I saw the princess slowly pulling herself up. Then I lost knowledge of what I did.

Medusa's magic almost killed me, but I must have managed to pull myself away from her and her spells. If she had come at me, or more of her servants appeared, I would have been done for. Already I had been wounded almost to death.
The King's scouts found me laying unconscious in the wilderness outside Medusa's stronghold. I do not know how I escaped, only that it was incredible that I was able to in my condition. Had I been aware, I would never have abandoned the princess, even as powerless as I had been made against Medusa.
I awoke under the care of healers in the King's palace. The King urgently questioned me as to the fate of his daughter. I told him all that I knew, and a council of the lords and generals of the kingdom was called. They met high in the palace's terraced towers, about a dozen lords and a few military commanders, most humans, but two or three other human-like creatures that ruled lands under the King's domain.

Together we decided that a full-out assault upon Medusa's stronghold was the only path open to us. The enchantment that had ensnared the princess and me in the river and then brought us to her was a deliberate act of war. Partway through the council, my wounds caught up with me, and the King was forced to give me back to the cares of the healers as the other generals and lords made plans for the campaign.
I was in the healers' chambers below the great tower that the council was meeting in, when I began to sense that something was wrong. I made the healers let me sit up in my bed, and gazed up to the tower where the council was taking place. I could feel that some presence was here that should not be. Delicately, I cast a searching tendril of magic around the palace, reaching about for what it was that intruded here. While I searched, one of the non-human creatures that was in the council came out to a porch atop the tower, and faced the sun.

I do not know remember the name of those creatures, but they had a ritual that they performed to the setting sun, and their leader had left the meeting to do it even now, as the sun was setting behind the hills of Medusa's stronghold in the far-off distance. As he raised his voice in song, many in the city looked up and saw him there on the porch.
I only felt evil intent. Suddenly I located it, centered just outside of the council room itself. With a burst of effort, I tore back veiling enchantments and revealed the creature creeping towards the door of the council chamber. I heard cries from the guards above as they recognized it, and suddenly there was a scream. The human-like creature that had been singing to the sun toppled from the porch and fell four stories to the street below. Needless to say, the council was thoroughly disrupted and chaos ensued; I had to give the order to seal the gates three times to a guard before I was finally obeyed.

Looking over the city walls, we could see Medusa's most powerful servant fleeing in his two-horse golden chariot. He turned back and sneered at us before he was out of sight, and though none but Medusa knows his name, we all recognized his face covered with sickly yellow-green fur.
What can I say? The next few days following the murder passed quickly, and the council, infuriated at having nearly been slaughtered by an assassin in their own capitol, mobilized our armies quickly. The King organized our forces into several columns, placing his trusted lords in charge of them. There was one lady, the ruler of one of the King's smaller tribes, who demanded her own command, but the King denied it.

As he said to me, “Her neighboring lord will one day rule her land as well: it is only her leadership that has kept them divided thus far; and that lord will need the experience of commanding both realms. It will bode well for them if they serve together under his banner now.” The King was a shrewd man, and though he consulted me on matters to do with the army, I would not have wanted to try to govern the lords and ladies of his kingdom as he had to.
Tensions rose high between them, differences flaring up between the aforementioned lady and another lord about some trivial matter, and only the overhanging threat of the battle we were to face when we reached Medusa kept the rulers united.

Ahead of us lay the sorceress's stronghold, and we knew that her servant that had attacked us in the capitol would be there. The princess was there, still alive the last time I saw her, there in Medusa's grasp. My stomach recoiled at the thought. We had to save her. No matter these bickering lords and ladies, the fate of the kingdom and the fate of the princess was at stake.
Some had delicately raised the possibility that she was already dead. But I knew this was not true. Somewhere deep in my heart, I could feel that she was still alive, and I knew that I would be the one that would have to save her.

DISCLAIMER...I know nothing of dreams, but I am willing to give it a shot. Your subconscious is struggling with the idea of becoming a writer. The mighty pen in hand. The jacket to a skirt might be the need for a pen name. The old man and the shove into the turbulent water could be society/others trying to dissuade you, claiming it to be a far fetched notion. The princess is your little voice, strong and encouraging to you. The hag is your struggle until the end. The door to the left is the less traveled path, the games a reflection of outside views about your decision. What do you think??? Good Luck

Your subconscience mind is questioning this war. Good and Evil. Is the sword mightier than the pen? When stabbing at another, are you not in some way stabbing at yourself, your humanity and soul, at the same time? Is there ever a time for a just war? Can one king keep the factions of his country from fighting with each other? Will this country ever get it together and be capable of taking care of themselves without evil or not? Is it not evil to fight over religeon? An old warrior is shouting blaspemy; is it blaspemy for a warrior to come out against this war? What is right and what is wrong? What is good and what is evil?
These are all questions of faith in your God, in your country and in your military service. There is nothing wrong with asking these questions; only wrong if you don't. The only right or wrong answers lie within your soul and seeking the answers is a powerful thing.
