If it needs tuning there's a pretty good way to tune it by ear, but you need to make sure that at least one string is tuned to the exact note it needs to be.
To get the strings in order, this is what you do:
1. Low E string (the thickest string) must be 5 fret notes below the sound of A string (the second thickest). Hold the low E string on the 5th fret and play in sync with open A. Tune appropriately.
2. See #1, substitute A for low E and D string (the 3rd thickest) for A.
3. See #2, substitute D for A and G (the 3rd thinnest string) for D.
4. The G string should be 4 fret notes below the B string (second thinnest string). Hold G on the 4th fret, play simultaneously with open B string and tune appropriately.
5. See #3, substitute B for D and high E (the thinnest string) for G.

Tell him to go to YouTube and type in " Standard Guitar Tuning " . Standard Guitar Tuning is EADGBE . Don't just tighten the strings until they are about to break . That's not tuning a guitar . Why is he scared to pop the strings . He'll have to change them every 2 months anyway . They are 10 bucks a pack .

Can you give us some more information, like are you familiar with how to play a guitar/general tunings, is the tuner battery powered and does it have a needle/red and green lights?

I recommend buying an Intellitouch tuner. It clips to your head stock and using it is self explanatory. Standard tuning goes(from low to high) EADGBE.

They are not supposed to be in order. The top string on your guitar(the fattest one) is the "E" string The one bellow it is the "A". Next is ""D" then "G", then "B" and the bottom string ( the skinniest one) is the high "E" . So from top to bottom, you have
E,A,D,G,B,E. Those are the open strings of the guitar!
I hope this little lesson was helpful! That will be $25 dollars please!
