As far as the eye can see, there is not one famous Asian recording artist in American or Canada. William Hung doesn't coun't because he sucks.

Oh, and I understand that alot of Asians do classical music, but that's not exactly my style.

BTW, I'm sorta tired of this stereotype.

I'm afraid that if you're looking to be a frontman for a band, then likely yes, unfortunately. The US music industry sucks. It's all about what the big companies think will sell & is marketable.
Your odds are better if you happen to be very good looking.

As a backing player/singer- no. Look at James Iha for ex.

EDIT:

But keep on keepin on, bro! It's gotta start SOMEwhere & maybe it'll be you. I love using Bruce Lee as an example. The 1st *leading* Asian to break into *mainstream* American movies.

I think you answered your own question all of which sounds pretty accurate. I am not sure of William Hung or who he is. I don't think any of this is because Asians are excluded or discriminated against. You make a good point that there are few in this industry. Not many from India, Russia, etc. either if you think about it. I guess it is a Black/White/Brown industry for the most part. Alot of jewish entertainers too. I am sure if you are good you will find your spot. Don't rely on your own discouragement to distance you from your dream. You still have to go for it to get it. If you don't try then you have yourself to blame. Try dressing up like Kiss and then they won't know your Asian then perform without your make up after becoming famous. Then you will kill your career like Jennifer Grey.

If you can make music, it may work to your advantage, really.

People want to put a face behind things, and if you are good at what you do it may help, actaully.

Just because some aren't mainstream, doesn't mean they don't exist.
I know several bands of whom have asian people in the group (I don't know any singers off hand, but many of whom handle an insterment with skill)

I think you're cute. Hmm. If I had to guess - I'd have to narrow it down to either South American, Italian or Greek. Any of those correct? If it makes you feel any better, most people think I'm Middle Eastern, but my roots are 100% Western Euro. ***EDIT - Siete Italiano! Sono impressionante!!! lol

Try having a gimmick other than being Asian. If you're skinny, be androgynous and metrosexual, and occasionally allude that you're gay. All the anime fans will flock to you. I don't understand it, but it'll sell records.

Yes,Music is an agonizing business.Unfortunately it is for the sexy white girl or the sexy African American girl or boy. White boys don't do to well ,Asians don't have a chance

Music doesn't have any racial or ethnical boundaries, as far as I'm concerned. The sound is all that matters.

I don't think your ethnicy as something to do with that.

I just think that the kind of music you play is more than saturated & you have to bring in something new...... or you have to be a pretty girl & show your body.... :)
