It can collapse if the walls get wet then slump down or if the supports fail. I think explosions occur when there is gas found.

collapse is usually caused by improper structural support. Exploding can be caused by gas pockets, and even the ignition of fine coal dust generated by the mining.

Methane gas is lighter than air and very explosive. The mines are to be vented but it cost money so they don't run the vent fans all the time. This allows gas to accumulate and if the fans don't exhaust the gas completely till the LEL is less than 10%.
