Sand them with 100 grit to speed the process of removing the old varnish.When removed sand with 150 grit then with 220 grit. Wipe away all traces of dust with a tack cloth. Apply a coat of polyurethane,dry, sand smooth with220 grit, tack cloth, apply 2nd coat ,dry, sand with 600 grit or 0000steel wool.

Get yourself some medium grit sandpaper 150-160 grit, and sand the arms down, then apply a new coat of varnish, let dry, dand with some 220 grit paper and put on another coat of varnish.

YES SAND TO MAKE SMOOTH OTHER WISE YOU WILL HAVE EDGES WHERE THE OLD VARNISH CHIPPED AND THE NEW WILL BUILD UP EVEN. ALSO SAND THE WHOLE THING SO THE NEXT COAT HAS A ROUGH OIL FREE SURFACE TO ADHERE TO. THEN JUST BUY A COUPLE CANS OF HELMS SPAR VARNISH AND SPRAY FINISH THEM. SPAR VARNISH IS WHAT IS USED ON BOATS ITS DURABLE UV RESISTANT AND VERYVERY WATER PROOF.
