In this case, the U probably means Unreported.
This is because midterm grades usually only need to be reported to the registrar for students who are athletes, or are remedial students, or are on academic probation, or are in a special program of some sort.
If you are just a regular student, your professors were most likely not required to turn in a midterm grade for you, and so they didn't. So the registrar puts a U there, for "unreported."

Some schools allow you to take classes and get them rated S or U (pass or fail) rather than an actual grade. That U means you didn't pass that class.

it could mean unsatisfactory ( ur failing) or it could mean unscorable ( mean you did not turn in enough stuff to get a grade). at thie point if i were u i would drop outta that class if i could. better take it again then it bringing ur GPA down.

I think it means "unsatisfied" for the component. I forgot. I know that an R means "retake" so maybe the U means not satisfied or something.
