My aunt by marriage, and best friend passed away a few months ago. A few wks. after her death, her sister asked if there was anything I wanted that had belonged to her. She named some jewelry pieces that she'd given the grandchildren and daughter in law. We had been best friends all of my adult life. Two days just before her death, she inquired about my lost bracelet. Because of that, when asked what I wanted, I asked if any bracelets were left. I was told that there were and yes, I could have one. After two months I was called to "look at some things." There were 3 pairs of 20 yr old shoes. I remember when they were purchased. The heels had to cut down over the years as my friend grew older. To me, her sister, who was jealous of our relationship played a cruel joke. I hugged her, and thank her graciously then left. What do you think?

She does sound cruel. I would pray for her to find peace, and relish the memories of friendship you had. I'm sorry for your loss, the loss of such a good friend must be hard to bear.

Take care.

I know just what you mean. My oldest sister died suddenly at the age of 64. She was 16 years older than I and had been like a mother to me. The last time I saw her (she lived on the west coast and I live on the east coast) she was upset about her daughter's marriage and told me that she wanted me to have a gold bracelet that had been in the family. Unfortunately, there was no will. When I asked her daughter, she laughed in my face and handed me an old scarf that belonged to her mother.
There is nothing you can do. What goes around comes around. Someday they will be treated badly, too.

To answer the first question, most people become cruel after a death because of a psycoclogical problem. They can blame themselves for the death or go into a deep depression because of that. It is very common to be cruel as well. It's not that they want to be its that they are hurt in the inside. So they cover it up by being cruel. To be prefectly honesty, i really don't get the story, sorry for that.

I think you did the right thing. You had the best thing that belonged to your aunt, her friendship.
This story proves that if you truly want someone to have something after your death... make a will, tag the item, mail them a letter saying what you want them to have. At least then you have a chance of having a say what happens to your stuff.

Just because it's family doesn't mean that they are friends. dna or not. family by marraige or not. what she did was unexcuseable. I say cut her out of your life and ignore her. After some time passes she will be wondering why you haven't beent talking to her...then you can tell her why.
