Is the phrase, "except in the case of risk to the mother" a red herring in the abortion debate?

I don't see how aborting the fetus then pulling it out by force can be any less risky than just delivering the baby naturally. I think that argument is a red herring. What do YOU think?

somehow I doubt simplistic generalizations can be applied to all circumstances.
