i've noticed on more than one occasion, that after i've logged off the internet, that there will be nothing on the computer desktop except the screensaver. nothing-no tool bar with a start menu, no folders, no files, no shortcuts, not even one for the internet! is this normal? in these instances, i've had to shut down the computer manually, which probably isn't helping the situation.

Go to your desktop, right click and hit properties, Go to the screen saver tab and choose monitor power. Change options to keep the HDD on and no standby or hibernation. See if that "cures" the problem.

No, this is not normal. When all the desktop components disappears, it's an indication that explorer.exe has failed. (explorer.exe is the Windows desktop application and is NOT Internet explorer).
You can restart it by pressing Control-Alt-Delete, then choosing FILE / New Task (RUN) and typing 'explorer.exe' into the window. Although this will restart the Windows desktop, it's not a fix to the problem.
I don't know where to send you on that one. This particular problem is a tough one to fix. I've had the problem result from adware on my machine, from bad software that runs in the toolbar, etc. It could be a million things.
Did this problem begin after you loaded a piece of software? If so, try removing that software to see if the problem goes away.
Try loading Firefox to see if the problem is Internet Explorer related. (You can get Firefox at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ It's free and it rocks). You could also download Internet Explorer 7 and see if the problem persists. It does seem to be related to something that ties itself to your IE or TCP/IP stack.
Good luck.

try pressing CTRL - ALT - DELETE whcih will open up the Windows Task Manager.
Click the APPLICATIONS tab and at the bottom click the NEW TASK button.
In the pop up screen type explorer.exe and hit ENTER.
That should start up explorer, which will bring up your normal desktop.
I know that doesn't explain why it's happening but at least it will get you running again.
