Lord of the Rings is one of, if not THE, best movies ever made. Basically there's this small creature called a hobbit that ends up having to destroy a very powerful ring to save Middle Earth. Awesome movie, you definitely have to watch it.

Lord of the Rings is based on the J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy by the same name. It takes place in his fictional Middle-Earth inhabited by hobbits, elves, dwarves, and lots of baddies. The entire trilogy revolves around destroying the one ring, held by the hobit Frodo, to stop the dark lord sauron from returning to Middle-Earth.

The trilogy is broken down into:

The Fellowship of the RIng
The Two Towers
The Return of the King

The Hobbit also takes place in Middle-Earth prior to the LoTR series but for the most part stands alone despite involving many of the same characters in the trilogy.

For a very brief summary, there's lots of battles between the "good" humans, elves, and dwarves, against the "bad" forces of mordor, mostly orcs. All the while Frodo and his company, (including the most recognizable: Gandalf - a wizard), make their way to Mount Doom, where they cast the ring back into the fire it was forged from and end the threat to Middle-Earth. And everyone lives happily ever after, who's still alive at least. There's many, many themes, characters, and plot elements, far beyond what can reasonably be told here.
