Environmental experts across Asia have urged dramatic action after a report warning all marine fish and seafood species faced collapse within 50 years.

This is very scary. Over 30 percent of 8,000 species are considered collapsed...due to overfishing, much of it within the last decade alone.

I read elsewhere that within 30 years most of the coral reefs would be dead too.

Does anyone care? What can we do? How do we get people to listen and care about stuff like this rather than blowing each other's brains out??

Screw the pursuit of oil and senseless wars...what will be left in this world if we're on the brink of destroying it???

Comments anyone???

Thank you Creme (and all)--I realize these are "dire" predictions, however that doesn't lessen the truth that it's happening. We've only got our youth, our children of today, to save the world from destruction. They have to see what a wicked path we're on, and we don't "need" oil, we've just created the need to need it. We can live just fine without it. Problem is corporations rule this world. Can the davids of this world topple the goliaths?

It's all senseless Gatz...but we've never been THIS close to the destruction the doomsdayers forecasted. It's like the boy who cried wolf...when will they listen? You are right, everyone is accountable!

I remember when I was a kid, Ted Danson telling me that our oceans wouldn't have anything living in it in 10 years. Well, it's probably been about 20 now, and guess what, we still have things living in our oceans. I don't believe it.
It's all about the money. These "scientists" are just trying to scare up money for research grants.
Please don't let this get you so upset. For as many things that you can find on the end of the world coming, I can find just as many on why it isn't.
As a matter of fact, here is a quote from Ray Hilborn, a University of Washington professor of aquatic and fishery sciences. When asked about Boris Worm's claim that their would be no seafood by 2048, he said "It's just mind-boggling stupid."

LOL I just answered another q where Amy beat me to part of what I was thinking of. Yup good ol' Danson was all over the place telling everyone the oceans would be lifeless in 10 years 20 years ago. Somehow we keep finding new species tho.

Yes we do damage to the environment and other lifeforms. Low frequency sounds are disruptive to whales. The smog cloud emanating from LA is not imaginary. There is global warming but not from us. The polar ice cap is melting!!! on Mars. Oh and here too. Going to happen because the sun is getting hotter or whatever. The north and south poles will trade places too. Again.

What should we do about it? Clean up our pollution. Yes. Bankrupt ourselves to do it? No. Work to get other nations to clean up their backyards? Yes.

"Screw the pursuit of oil..." Gee how do you get from point A to B? How do you get everything you have or consume? (hint: trucks) Alternative energies are finally getting the push they should have had starting in 1974 (the first oil embargo).

Someone has pretty near always been on the brink of destroying the world as it was known. Now it is the mini tyrants getting big boy weapons. So just how senseless is a war against those forces?

G'day Eve,

Thank you for your question.

The warning was not quite as dire as that. However, the report published in Science was forecasting the end of commercial fisheries in 40 years. However, some nations such as the US, New Zealand and Australia are taking steps to protect their fisheries. We need sensible steps put in place to protect fish and other marine species just like we have for whales.

We are also having some problems with coral reefs such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia are subject to coral bleaching. However, it may be that other areas may open up to coral as the environment becomes more suitable.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards

Calm down, Eve. These same predictions come along every few years, and everything is not as bad as it seems compared to the standards of some of the "chicken Littles" out there.
As for the persuit of oil?? Believe it or not our entire economy runs on it. I for one would like to make sure WE get our share. After all, when you think about it, I want to make sure there's plenty not only for us , but our children and grandchildren etc, as well. Imagine them looking back and cursing US out because we did nothing to make sure our nation endured and prospered in the long run?? I don't know what You drive, but my car runs on gas, and my home is heated with oil.
As for senseless wars???? We're human. Get used to it. We've been doing it as long as we've been on the planet. (Sad to say)

kois are pond fish that improve over 20 inches. they require chilly water, they should not be in a heated tank as this might wreck there immune gadget and shorten there existence spans. angel fish are very mushy, did you totally acclimate them until eventually now including them to the tank? you need to glide them for 20 minutes, then open the bag, upload water out of your tank into the bag until eventually it includes a million area bag water and a million 0.5 area new tank water., enable it waft back for quarter-hour. then very heavily get rid of a few water from that bag, pour it in a bucket or something, and upload greater new tank water. than waft them back for quarter-hour. you may now launch them into your tank. it relatively is not likely that an infection might kill your fish that quickly, it replaced right into a lot greater possibly a nitrogen leap. it sounds such as you have different stocking themes, please state the dimensions, age and occupants of your tank so we are able to make it easier to extra. plecoes are tropical fish and is probably no longer thrown right into a sparkling environment with turtles, the stress will kill them if the turtles do no longer. We as a race, are perhaps blinder than bats when it comes to the environmental damage that modernization is doing to our home, planet Earth.
Does anyone in their right mind think that this planet can continue to sustain this form of abuse.
Unfortunately, it isn't going to get any better so, like it or not, we're all screwed!
