I heard that a tri-mode phone is your best bet if you're off the beaten path a lot.

Living in Rural Oregon I would say the answer to this question is no, Verizon does NOT have the best coverage. In general, if you are on a main highway, the coverage is acceptable, but if you are more than a 1/4 mile off of them, the coverage is not as good as Cingular or Edge Network. There is some kind of a relationship between Cingular and Edge (from when Cingular bought AT&T 's interest). Edge tends to cover the coastal area while Cingular is inland. They use the same towers for service - Verizon has their own. I've been with AT&T/Cingular/Edge for 4 years now and don't have the problems my Verizon friends experience. I've used the service extensively on the I_5 corridor, but also in the rural areas on tons of back roads and smaller hamlets.

Hope this info helps.

I don't know about oregon, but I live in rural Wyoming, and we have both aanalog and digital towers here. The phones that work best are Verizon's LG with both analog and digital. Ask specifaically when you buy. Visitors to our area are always upset that their digial phones don't work.

Keep in mind, Verizon is shutting off analog service in 2008.
