I have an art teacher who is rubbish at his job. The head has had many complaints about him and his teaching. He only helps the people he likes and he grades your work without even looking at it. There was obviously something that happened because today he was asking everyone if they were OK and if they needed help. However, when I asked him if my fish was good (which I thought was OK, but not that brill and could have had some improvement) he looked at it really funny and then said that he loved it and it was really good. I do not think that he was telling the truth - What should I do?

Your fish may have really connected with him. Asking for a more detailed critique - or even, what he sees is good, and what he sees as bad, might really be a good idea. He sounds like he is worried about saying anything at all - you don't mention the class atmosphere, or whether he is a good artist - so maybe he got shot down somewhere along the line, and is just trying to get through the day. A question that is not challenging, but respects his opinion might just make for a much better art class in future. And to have a good art class is worth trying to find out what makes this guy tick.

You said it yourself, if you didn't think the fish was extra great, then it wasn't. You are the only critic that matters in the end; not teachers, not art critics. If you believe in something you create, if you think it is good, that is all that matters. And ...also if you think you need to keep improving, then you are a true artist. We don't really rest on our laurels at all. We always see what is wrong with what we have made. And we always strive to make it better and better.
As far as the teacher goes, don't even give him too much thought. If he was a true artist, he would understand the varying degrees of art.

Listen, the thing you have to remember about ALL artists is that we're a) renegades, b) on another planet and c) probably stoned.

Why don't you ask him WHY he liked it, then you'll get a decent answer out of him!!

At least he didn't paint all over it like I saw an art teacher do when I was on work placement. That b*tch made me realise that I DO NOT want to teach art!!
