You will need to consult a lawyer with a background in international domestic law; however, Germany has a terrible record in this respect. It considers the child of a German and a non-German to be a German citizen and the non-Germans' rights as a parent are not recognized.

If her mother doesn't want her to see you, you will not be able to until she is of legal age and can make the decision herself.

edited to add: I am so very sorry. The German government is completely on her side in this matter, regardless of who is in the right.

We can only pray that your daughter grows up to be a thoughtful young woman who decides to investigate for herself your side of the story.

I wish you the very best of luck.

If you had any rights under German law you should have exercised them a long time ago. You also have duties under German law. I expect the mother has received support money from the government for being a single parent. If you try to exercise any parental rights now, the government is going to want to recover theircosts plus interest and expenses.

She's 14, 2 years away from the age of majority and may or may not know anything about you. Now is not the time to start stirring things up. Let it be and move on.

Sorry, I don't know that much about legal issues of this nature, but I felt compelled to look for something for you. I found this web site for an International Family Law office in NY, NY. According to their website they do handle international child custody issues. It seems like the international child custody issues they deal with have to do more with a child being abducted from this country by one parent and taken overseas. I know your situation is different, but it might be worth a phone call to this office to find out if your case is something they can help with. Good luck to you!

the child isn't just German, but half American.

so why did you wait til she was 14 to try to get to see her? If you had appealed to the authorities back when she was a newborn, you would probably have had a much better chance to see her.

You can still appeal to the authorities.

In this country, if you hadn't signed away any rights to the child, you could still get to see her (if it all happened here).
