It has always been that way. It is mostly economic reasons. Of course there are some wealthier people in the military but the vast majority are not from well to do families. They are mostly from the working class or poor. This is a fact. Wars definitely benefit the rich the most. They are the ones who run companies or own large amounts of stock in companies that make lots of money from wars. Sure, wars can be for our freedom or for good causes, but obviously not all. If yo don't have money to get to college the military is an option for training or college money. If you have been in trouble it is often a route taken to re-establish yourself. Having a family with wealth and connections comes in very handy during a draft as well.

Read the statistics, the largest majority of military service is done by people in the $55,000 and up category. Many of these are college bound, college graduates, or seeking even higher education. It was John Kerry, that joker, in the early 70's that said the volunteer military would be made up of the poor, the black and the brown. After hearing that, do people still think that arrogant, racist snob was just trying to make a funny this week?

Some of the less fortunate members of this society join the military in order to be eligible for the G.I. Bill. That way, they can go to college, get an education, and move up the social ladder. Class division is a fact of life and has been in every civilized culture since Mesopotamia.

Funny, I didn't notice Chelsea Clinton serving in Somalia, Bosnia, Afghanistan or Iraq. You failed to mention that in your question. Thought I would help even the question out. Democrats with money don't have children serving either.

Simply because it is the rich people who make or influence the legislation that becomes law.
At one time, not too long ago, (WWII) it was known that you WOULD serve in some capacity or another, but now with all volunteer service. It is too easy to keep their kids safe at home or at school.
For those that would trash President Clinton for not serving...
He was a legitimate Rhodes Scholor and therefore exempt.
"President" bush on the other hand failed his fitness evaluations
in THE GUARD!!!

You want Bush's daughters in the war? Why? What qualifies them as fighting personnel? I am proud of our soldiers and think them the best of our society. You seem to think them lesser members of society, shame on you.

Two words -- Class warfare.
Its a cheap trick. Think more of yourself.
And the decision to serve is not up to parents. Its up to the young adults themselves.
I served in the Navy 86-90. The decision was mine.

I believe the operative word is rich, and to use John Kerry's words, get an education so you don't end up in Iraq. Strange Kerry got his a*se blasted for saying as much, while those same people are using his strategy.
Go ahead folks, blast away at me, I'll take another toke and smile as I read.
