I think the age of consent should be somewhere about the age that other responsibilities are allowed.

I think children should not be having sex, only adults. It depends how you define an adult.

Deciding whether to have sex is a very important decision for most people and you need a certain level of maturity to make that decision. Most people believe that sex should only occur within a loving relationship or marriage. You can't get married in the UK until you're 16.

If most people in the UK were leaving school, getting jobs and getting married at age 12, I think there'd be a better case for moving the age of consent.

As it is, I'm left with what my mother said "if all your friends were jumping over a cliff, would you?"

Given the way many young girls in town this afternoon (Saturday) were dressed someone new to UK could easily believe the age of consent was already 12.
Are the indignant parents answering this question the same ones who allow their underage daughters to dress like eighteen year olds.
To answer the question, No the age of consent in UK should not reduced. We have too many teen pregnancies and single parent families already.

In days gone by when young people had to work along with their parents to make ends meet, then they were responsible enough to marry and start new families at a younger age. Today, that is not the case. Kids are not responsible enough at that age to start a new family. How many 12 yr. old boys do you know that can support a wife and kids? Give the youth a chance to grow up, mature and become responsible adults before they tackle the responsibility of family life.

It wouldn't solve a thing at all. Each and every one of us is different and so we all mature at different ages. What might suit one child might not be good for another.
As for the answer which talked about the Middle Ages, they were married earlier only because the average age at death was so low, and the chances of having an heir to the family name were then reduced. Younger girls were believed to have more chance of giving birth to healthy babies too.
As for your being a pervert, I don;t think you are. It is quite a serious legal issue which has been much debated. It needs considering.

Um it depends on the state... and I think 12 is a LITTLE young. People don't even know which way is up when they're 12 and 13, too little to make a decision like that on their own! I'd say 17 is a good age, and a lot of states are already there.

Age of consent in the US varies from state to state. IIRC, it is 12 in at least one state in the US if she is not a virgin. It doesn't make sense, but there you are.

I was going to be offensive because I just assumed that you must be a pervert if you have the audacity to ask this Question. Then I thought maybe you are just a bit thick. But I don't have the right to make assumptions without knowing more. So I'm going to have to accept that you ARE a pervert and child molester, and to answer the question, NO!
I just had a look at some other answers and I accept that some of them are being sarcastic or just downright stupid but some are just insidiously sick. It is no good trying to hide behind the mask of history. We have supposed to have moved on, and to say because it was acceptable to rape and pillage in the past, and because third world countries have lax laws, or even worse, states in the U.S. where children are systematically abused in the name of religion. Or, in states where so-called religious sects have the legislature in their pockets, and abuse children with impunity. Well, I do not have any belief in a supreme being, but sometimes I really wish that there was some proof that a god existed, because if he did, or does exist, then surely you people, and you know who you are, would burn and rot in hell and it would be only what you deserve.

What is your source of the information that 12 is the age of consent in Mexico?
Don't take it personally, I always need to confirm the correctness of statements that sound a little strange to me before I can comment.

Say who ??. Your source would be useful. I live in Mexico and one of the top news nowdays is the ongoing judicial process against a man, a very rich businessman, who is in jail for having had relations with 12 and 13 years old girls. He was extradited from the US and is in jail in Cancun.

Well it is a difficult question. While I certainly don't agree that you are a perv, and I don't support those who would wish you harm if you "tried it on" with their daughters, it would be a major cultural shift to make this change.

But on the other hand in the middle-ages girls were normally married off and laden with children by their mid teens. Sexual maturity is surely at age 13 (or thereabouts) for a reason?
