It depends on what it is that is upsetting you you. Is it a death of someone close to you? If so, then you may be upset by it, but remembering them will bring you some pleasure and peace.
Is it a rape or something like that? Sometimes you need to talk about it so that you don't live in fear for the rest of your life. You don't want to hide in the shadows of an attack to where it interferes with your life. Sometimes talking about it gives you power over it, or it might help someone else who is also having a hard time dealing with the same kind of thing.
Is it something that is going on in your life still in the present and is on-going? Then you may need to talk to someone about it so that it is out in the open and is not a threat to you anymore. Again, you gain the power over it, and not it over you.
Find someone you can really trust and talk about it....you will feel much better than letting it build up inside of you.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Talk about it. What ever has or is still happening to you talk about it. If there is nobody to talk to, you can phone the Samaritans which is a counselling service and their number is in the phone book. You can stay anonymous, and if you need advice they will point you in the right direction. Don't try and ignore what is happening to you. It is obviously upsetting you and if there is one person in this world you need to look after, it is yourself. I hope every thing works out well for you.

I guess another way of asking would be: How effective are your efforts to compartmentalize and avoid discomforting events in your life?

I have gotten much better as the number of traumatic events has taught me that life does indeed go on. It is an effective coping mechanism, if not taken to the extreme.

Don't fret about putting the uncomfortable thoughts away, your subconscious is working on it all along, even if you are not aware of it.

The more you try to not think about something the more you'll end up thinking about it. The secret is to find something different to take your minds attention. Movies, games, books, crafts, even answering these questions will help.

I always think about it. thats the only way to work it out. If you don't think about it, you just suppress it and that does no good to anyone. What ever it might be, I think about it and the more I think about it the better I feel because I am getting over it. not just having it sit in the back of my mind forever and forever having it bother me.

i always think that talking to someone is the best option as whatever the problem is it will not go away by itself, the person you talk to maybe able to help you or they will just lend an ear to listen and that in itself often takes alot of stress off of yourself. good luck.

i know it can be hard my best friend is trying so hard with a matter but i know she thinks all the time about it and i believe when you talk about it you are keeping the pain alive.

if it persists as my friends pain is please go to a councellor which ive just convinced her to book on monday, hope that helps try writing stuff down but i really think councellor or hynosis is best.
