The root of the answer has to do with the fact we have two hands. Eight fingers and two opposing thumbs on a single hand on a single arm would make wanking quite tiresome. Besides, all the computer keyboards in the world, and all the pianos would have been oddly made. If all else fails, think a devine designer wanted us to be able to say, "on one hand we have, but on the other...."

Well we dont we have four and a thumb. It easier to grab onto things and make tools with the digits that we have the aposable thumb is interesting especially . Our feet became flat and so we can walk upright and yet we have this extra digit which greatly helps in fiddly stuff. Basically nature showed that 5 digited humans survived better so natural selection meant we got 5 digits

I don't understand why people say thumbs aren't fingers.. of course they are! Fingers mean something coming out of your hand, and... yes, they do.
