Here is a recent discussion between AS patients concerning weightlifting. I think you can access it. At least I could from a browser than doesn't remember me as a member of the SAA.

There are probably better ways for AS patients to lose weight than weightlifting, and most doctors won't recommend it.

If you try it, be careful and start slow. You may find it works for you, or you may find yourself limited to what you can do, depending upon the level of severity of your illness. I don't think you will do anything traumatic to your illness, but your limited mobility will leave you prone to tweaks and tears and such of unrelated soft tissue.

Good luck.

Yes, but I would definitely recommend involving a professional to help you begin. This will ensure that you do not overload your joints and are doing the exercises that will help and not hurt you. You could seek out a personal trainer, but only one who knows what AS is, otherwise, find someone else. A physical therapist may be a better option to getting you started. They are knowledgeable about the anatomy and pathophysiology of AS and the effectiveness of exercise. You can call local clinics and look for someone who has had experience with AS patients.

Don't see why not since your main problem is in your spine. However, you will have difficulty doing bending or probably not be able to do it at all. Your other joints might be affected also. Why not just see a dietitian-losing weight doesn't mean you have to stop eating.
