I have a 1988 corvette that is hard to start when the engine is hot. When it does start, you can smell gas. Most of the time when it does start it cuts off and I have to continue to restart it.

Probably the fuel/air mixture setting. Too much fuel. Get it re-tuned.

If it is fuel injected check your fuel rail pressure from the pump to the injector rail(there is a connection port to do this near or at the fuel rail you can test load line pressure from pump and running pressure with engine idling this way.If you smell fuel you may have a leak dropping pressure in system. This will also affect the starting(not enough line pressure to fire injectors ).Also if you have a hot engine problem (a sensor relay ) could be causing the engine not to start easy.[such as a temperature sensor reads too high a temp and wont let the engine run ].You get the same effect if you have abnormaly low oil or oil pressure the car will die or will not start to prevent engine damage .
Something to look into on your VETT

Might well be but could also be many other things. HOT engine can be caused by overheating from a coolant problem which will in turn cause hard starting, ignition timing, if you are too advanced it going to be hard starting, valve adjustment (exhaust valves aren't seating it will cause over heating) and so on! Really need a mechanic that knows his business diagnose it. 88 had throttle bodies which is nothing more than a glorified carburator and therefore you can smell gas for various reasons.

Sounds like a fuel pump. If your smelling gas= look under it everywhere while parked safely to check for leaks. Do not drive it with these fumes because it could combust and cause a fire.
