He was a despotic leader of a socialist party (the Baathist party) who hated communists. I've always suspected that Hussein's line about hating communists was simply to keep the CIA supporting him.

The irony has always puzzled me.

Neither. He was nominally a Ba'ath party member but in reality just used the party's administrative machine to impose a violent despotism on Iraq. Fascism and Communism both require some kind of ideological framework but Saddam Hussein didn't care about such niceties.

It has been reported in the early days of his rule that he based his methods of state terror on those of Joseph Stalin. This might be where the idea of his being Communist comes from.
