i bought an old very used car. i dont have much money and the thing is in need of a tuneup. well it gets 12 mpg. no thermostat, smog pump was froze. etc. well im going for the pump next, but why the heck were the plug wires rearranged? it seems that when you viewed the cap (i should pay attention), all but 2 of the wires were going to left side of cap left of block, right of cap right of block. now, i rearranged the wires when i got the thing, and have had them off to clean oil from them, but why didnt i notice this? and second, when i was transfering the wires to the cap, i started at #1 and went counterclockwise. well when i got half way around, i pulled the next wire loose to move it. when i looked back at the old cap for the next 1, it seems i skipped 1. so, i moved the 2 wires in question, turned out there were 4 wires wrong. ive done this atleast 100 times, hmmm and does it = poor mileage.no backfires etc, just more power now.
btw, verified fire order months ago, how did it happen

firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 with the front of vehicle passenger side no. 1 and if u pull cap rotor should be pointing at no. 5 which is drivers side first cylinder and cool u did go counter clock wise now here is what u do u have to reset the motor and possibly the distributor so take valve cover off passenger side if u know anything about motors watch ur rockers move and rotate the motor no.1 tdc watch the intake rocker after it closes ur on compression then watch balancer for timing marks. then check ur rotor where is pointing should point to no. 5 if not fix it so it is that is factory postion will help when fixing car later then counter clockwise make it work also go buy a hanes or chiltons manual it will help hope this helps

You didn't say what motor. Try replacing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I don't know what you've got, so I don't know what kind of mileage potential you have. My old Ford only gets 10 mpg and that is a good as it gets. It has a low speed rear end so that is where the gas goes. Try reading your plugs, are they black, tan, or white. Black means your burning to much fuel, tan is perfect, I don't think white is going to be a problem for you. On older cars the carburetor can cause bad mileage which will cause black plugs. Good luck.

What is an old car? For me, its 1975 or older. What engine? 6cyl or V8? Year of engine? Size of engine? Stock, modified? What is your question?
