In response to a recent post regarding car wax...someone wrote that place like AutoZone and Advance are not true specialty stores with a knowledgeable staff. So now I'm curious--what are some good places to go to for advice? for good prices? On things like waxes and tire shines etc.

The same reason the detroit 3 are still even in business. "Patriotism". Same thing happened in the 70s during the oil crisis, "buy American, dont buy foreign". Of course now people realize that not only is it better on the pocketbook at the dealership, it's better in the long run. A: Better quality control B: Lower price C: Better gas mileage D: Lower maintenance due to A The reason the idiots in Detroit lost out so much is because of their unwillingness to do anything about economy because of the whole "buy American" thing. Gas prices went through the roof, and sales of SUVs (their main production) plummeted, and then people realized the cars were no better. Now they're asking for money to "fix the business". However, gas prices are down again, people will go back to buying SUVs, however a little lower priced, and they'll be back to their old practices. History has shown they dont learn, and history usually repeats itself. Oh and an edit: Toyota has plants in the US, and hence employs American workers, so do Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi (plant sharing). Does that really affect quality? Nope, because the company makes sure quality is first (instead of just making it a slogan like another certain company)

Auto part stores will likely not be experts on this topic, but they most likely do carry good products. If you buy any waxes, polishes or tire shines, be sure to buy reputable brands like Meguiars or Mother's. Any of these products will be readily available and are very good products.

Pep Boys, Kragan, and AutoZone will generally all sell the same products. I would recommend researching this information online. Find consumer reviews and opinions and read recommendations then buy the products yourself. Or, consult with a car detailer and ask him/her what products they use.

NAPA (National Auto Parts Association)
Long time industry leaders. Slightly more expensive than Auto Zone type stores but you get much better quality parts by the industry leading manufacturers and auto factory authorized distributors.

Anywhere that sells Meguiars or Mothers products. It doesn't matter where you buy, it matters what you buy.
