We paid off some land from my step daughter and son in law, and they told us it was ours. Now, my son in law and her are divorced and he is gone and we don't know where he is at all. How can we get the title of the land over into our names. We have paid the taxes on it for the past 6-8 years.

If the "KIDS" were divorced, there should be a property settlement available which would likely itemize the property in your step-daughter's name or her ex-husband (usually accompanied by a quit claim deed relinquishing the other person's interest in the property). If your step-daughter (or perhaps a court file) has these documents she has sole interest in the property and can easily transfer it to your name. If not you will need to call a lawyer to make a claim in absentia.

You have to file a suit in absentia claiming the son in law abandoned the property at which point the court would appoint an attorney to represent his interest. The appointed attorney would have to publicize the court action. That is what those "Anyone know the whereabouts of Joe Blow" ads in the newspapers are for.

If he is unsuccessful in locating him and after a court hearing, the property should revert to you at no cost or the judge could order you to deposit money into the court registry for his share until he was located.

You should have gotten it when you first paid it off.

If you failed to do that you will now have to file some form of "quiet title" action against him in court, which may involve publishing notice and producing evidence in court of the agreement and your payment. You'll need an attorney for this.

You should contact an attorney right away.
