My mother was told by my neighbours she could not park in front of there drive on the other side of the road. they have a drive and a white line painted outside she did not park in front of thier drive on thier side but on the opposite side in front of my house on the other side of the road. My neibours told her to move it cos it was illegal or they would smash it with a hammer. Is this right

It is not illegal to park on the white line, but you are advised against it in the highway code. As for parking opposite it, common sense should come in here, if it is a narrow road the possibility of your own car being hit by someone reversing out of their driveway is high, but if the road is wide why not?
If someone threatens to smash a car up with a hammer because they think they OWN the road they should be treated with the contempt the deserve. Buy a car of eBay for 50 quid, register it in you neighbours name, and park across their drive way. Then have a chuckle.

If there is a drop kerb outside your neighbours house you may not park outside their house. The white line opposite just marks the boundary of the carriageway. You can park opposite the drive as long as it is not seen as an obstruction, that is for the police to decide and not you neighbour. A far as the threats are concerned don't muck about get the police involved sound like your neighbours are nutters

That is so wrong, I also think that they cant legally stop her parking in front of there drive. A friends parents complained to the police that a car had been left blocking there drive for 2 days and they were told there was nothing they ( the police)could do as it had a valid tax disc , but if her parents wanted it removed they would have to do it privately and pay for it themselves

I did that once parked opposite I got told to move it and I said look I have valid tax and looked at the road said no white lines, no double yellow lines and no resident parking lines either. They said they would scratch the car so I said if the car gets a scratch their car would be set on fire.
I wouldn't have done it, but it seemed to work.

You cannot actually legally park anywhere on British roads. If you are causing an obstruction, you can be charged. Parking opposite someone's drive isn't specifically banned, but it is thoughtless and selfish. Threatening to smash property with a hammer is a much more serious offence.

Smashing with the hammer really would be illegal. Your neighbours need anger management.

As long as you are not causing an obstruction and threre isn't a "No Parking" sign then I think you are allowed to park anywhere except on yellow lines.( double or single )

You can park there.
Let the police know about the hammer threat(get it logged) they will have a word or know where to look if anything happens.
